Azimut Yachts, Technical Partner and Official Yachting Partner of Ferrari Hypersail, Ferrari’s project for offshore ocean racing.
The technical challenge landed on Azimut’s R&D and Technical Departments: design a boat able to tow the Hypersail prototype to around 30 knots during its first trials, without mast and sails, while supporting take-off and flight on the foils. The answer came from a team effort across naval design, structural and systems engineering and interior fit-out, starting from the Fly 72 platform and rethinking its power-to-weight ratio.
The innovation sits in the engineering choices. Azimut’s long experience with carbon fibre made it possible to cut 6 tonnes from the boat and, at the same time, integrate 4,000 hp into its structure and systems, a custom installation developed exclusively for Hypersail. The tow post that connects the two boats was designed on rigorous strength tests to withstand extreme static and dynamic loads.
The work was also shaped around the people who will use it. The on-board layout has been reconfigured for the technical team led by Enrico Voltolini, to make their job easier during testing, and the boat will follow the project from the first trials to major events worldwide. Ashore, Hypersail’s Operational Base is set up at the Azimut shipyard in Livorno.
For Andrea Antichi, General Manager of Azimut Yachts, it is a project that generates new knowledge for the whole yachting world: in effect, a technological development platform. For Lorenzo Giorgetti, Chief Racing Revenue Officer at Ferrari, Azimut’s contribution supports key activities in Hypersail’s development and testing phase.
